SYMPOSIUM

How can research and educational activities contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals?

Building Pan-Pacific Partnerships: Transcending boundaries towards collaborative rehabilitation of wetlands and their communities

June 6, 2018 5-7 pm

Sophia University, Building 2, 17th Floor, Room 1721

Wetlands in all corners of the globe are in crisis. While many environmental issues gain increasing attention worldwide, the degradation and destruction of wetlands is often a silent phenomena, overlooked by many. In the 20th Century 60% of global wetlands were lost, despite a growing awareness of the crucial role that wetlands play in delivering key ecosystem services upon which many communities rely.

Alongside the environmental degradation of wetlands often runs social degradation. Time

is running out both on the local level and global level and the call for collective action to reverse the adverse trends of socioecological degradation of wetlands and the people who depend on them is one of urgency.

This symposium aims to provide a forum to transcend geopolitical and academic boundaries to explore the building of partnerships between Japan and Colombia to revitalize wetlands and their incumbent communities. Further, this forum hope to make steps forward in collaborative research and educational activities linking Japan with Colombia and other Latin American countries to build a Pan-Pacific Partnership of wetland community revitalization towards achieving SDGs related to wetland conservation and their communities.
